“At Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte we employ capable designers who have understood what we mean

by watches. Our catalogue demonstrates that, despite all of these considerations and demands on design, the result is a product with extraordinary aesthetic appeal. There must be some truth in the adage that form follows function; indeed, we are its proof. And we want our customers to enjoy checking their watches.

Mühle Glashütte and fine mechanics unite more than 130 years of tradition. Since the foundation of the first company "Robert Mühle & Sohne" in 1869, fine mechanical tools and measuring instruments have been the traditional products of the house of Mühle. Founded anew by his grandson one year after expropriation in 1946, the second Mühle company specialized in drive and braking mechanisms as well as various measuring instruments.

The present head, Hans-Jürgen Mühle, felt indebted to the heritage of the house of Mühle. He took over the family business after the death of his father in 1970.

State participation, compulsory nationalization and the take-over of the company by the Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe in 1980 followed. Since 1994, however, Hans-Jürgen Mühle has been the sole owner of "Firma Mühle, Nautische Instrumente & Feinmechanik", a family enterprise with an eventful history. He was successful in synthesizing the values of the great past with innovative ideas for the future in the third Mühle company in Glashütte.

Mühle Glashütte watches join the remarkable success of watches made in Germany. One look at their case finishing, dial designs and movements will reveal a quality timepiece. To date these watches have been available to watch connoisseurs primarily in Europe only, with limited distribution in the United States

.

The company has only a small annual production, and is focused on the quality of each watch. Their watchmakers are all located in Glashütte, which also houses the company's administrative offices.

"A future without a past is difficult to imagine, yet one who only lives in the past has no future", according to Hans-Jürgen Mühle. The vision has already become reality.

This is a brand that only increases in popularity. It has become one of the most collectible and affordable mechanical watches on the market today, and represents true German craftsmanship.

If you don't already own a Mühle Glashütte watch, you are missing out on a well-kept secret.

“Precise – exactly like us . . .”

“At Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte one thing comes before all else: accuracy. We know how to make an excellent movement even better. We use Swiss movements as the basis, since they have proven to be reliable and robust thousands of times over.

The first stage of our company philosophy reveals

itself in our choice of suppliers and stringent quality controls: there is no movement which cannot be significantly improved.”

People who value Mühle watches have a particular relationship to mechanics, precision and accuracy. They know how important the interplay is between drive, escapement and regulator.

And they like to see it too: the bases of

our automatic watches usually have viewing windows made of glass. In addition to accuracy of fit, with minimum tolerances that give the workings ease of movement, it is adjustment after assembly that is crucially important.

This is done in five different positions in which we put all of our watches before they are shipped.

We then set the timepieces so that the sum of the deviations is as small as possible – but rather a touch too fast than too slow. It is our company’s philosophy that the owners of Mühle watches should never arrive late – rather a little early. It is more polite that way.

Form and design: our creative side

“We at Nautische Instrumente Mühle-Glashütte are purists. That does not mean we are averse to the beautiful things in life – our watches prove otherwise. However, we do value straightness. Our watches are above all instruments for the measurement of time. It is for this reason that they look the way they do: understated and unembellished. There is one thing they have to do before anything else, which is that they must make clear the time at a glance. All other functions (complications) are subordinated to that principle”
